New Jersey Driving Without Insurance Ticket

Driving Without Liability Insurance (N.J.S.A. 39:6B-2)

Driving without liability insurance is one of the most serious traffic offenses in New Jersey. In fact, driving without liability insurance has greater potential penalties for a first offense than Driving Under the Influence.

The penalties for a first offense to this statute can include a fine of up to $1,000, mandatory suspension of your driver’s license for one (1) year, community service at the discretion of the Judge, plus Motor Vehicle surcharges of $750. For subsequent offenses, the fines can go up to $5,000, you would be exposed to up to fourteen (14) days in jail, 30 days of community service and a suspension of two (2) years. In addition to these penalties, your insurance company can issue their own “insurance points” for their records and potentially raise your insurance rates or charge you a surcharge.
