Cell Phone Violations (N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3)
If you were ticketed for driving while using your cell phone, you may be facing serious penalties. As of July 2014, New Jersey has increased the penalties associated with driving while using your cell phone.
- For a first offense, the fine can be up to $400.
- For a second offense, the fine can be up to $600.
- And for any subsequent offense, the fine is up to $800, the Motor Vehicle Commission will assess three (3) points to your driving record, and your license can be suspended.
Note: In addition, your insurance company can issue their own “insurance points” for their records and potentially raise your insurance rates or charge you a surcharge.
